HMT Arsenic Test kit
There is about 10 to 20 mg. of arsenic in the human body. In very small amounts arsenic may even be essential and functional in humans. Organic arsenic as arsenates and elmental arsenic both found naturally in the earth and in foods do not readily produce toxicity. The inorganic arsenites or tivalent forms of arsenic, such as arsenic trioxide used industrially and found as a food contaminate, seem to create the problems. They accumulate in the body, particularly in the skin, hair, and nails, but also in internal organs. Arsenic can accumulate when kidney function is decreased. Absorption of arsenic is fairly low, usually less than 5 percent. Most of it is eliminated in the feces and some in the urine.
Contents of the HMT Arsenic Test kit
- 1 Colour strip on box of kit
- 1 Test Instruction Sheet
- 1 Large Test-tube
- 1 indicator stick (in the large test-tube cap/cover)
- 1 vial with clear cap - reagent 1 (solid content)
- 1 vial with red cap - reagent 2 (liquid content contains hydrochloric acid. Avoid any contact with skin or eyes. Rinse immediately and contact your doctor if contact is made or esepcially if an eye splash occurs)
Precautions and Storage
The Arsenic Test kit should be stored in a cool place - 12C to 20C. .
Preparation of sample solution
- Remove the the 2 vials from the large test tube
- Remove the indicator stick from the cap of the large test-tube
- In the empty large test-tube, add 8 ml. of the solution to be tested
- The solution is now ready for testing. Make sure that prior to testing, the large test-tube is secure and stable and preferably not held by the fingers.
Conducting the test
- Add content from clear-cap vial (solid reagent 1) to the large test-tube containing the solution to be tested
- Return the indicator stick back into the cap of the large test-tube. Make sure that it is only a short way in cap
- Add content of red-cap vial (liquid reagent 2) to the large test-tube and IMMEDIATELY cover or cap the large test-tube as fumes would be emitted by the mixed solutions. Please make sure that the reaction area of the indicator stick in the cap of the large test-tube is at least 2 cm above the combined solutions in the large test-tube. Be careful of any foam that may be formed by the solution mixture. Please make sure that no contact is made with the solutions in the large test tube.
- Carefully shake the large test-tube every five (5) minutes for about twenty (10 - 20) minutes. This is to allow the fumes emitted by the mixed solutions to react with the reaction area of the indicator stick
- After 30 minutes remove the indication stick from the large test-tube and dip in water for 1 second, sufficient to wet the reaction area
- Shake off any excess liquid and compare the colour of the reaction area on the indicator stick to the colour strip provided
Results colour reference (for example only - the numbers indicate parts per million.)
