Prevent Aggravating your Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Image of a healthy colonIrritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a problem that generally affects the bowel (also called the large intestine). If you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) you may have specific associated symptoms including cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhoea, and constipation. You may also have mucus in the motion (stool) you pass and you may feel that you have not properly finished a bowel movement.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is not a disease, it is a functional disorder – you have this condition because your bowel is not working as it should. This disorder is unlikely to damage the bowel or cause disease. What happens is that your bowel nerves and muscles have become very sensitive and so what you eat and drink and how you feel physically or emotionally can set of an adverse reaction in your bowel.

The best person to discuss your symptoms with is your Doctor or Qualified Health practitioner. They can not only properly diagnose the condition but will also be able to advise on diet and lifestyle changes that can help improve your condition.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can be painful to the sufferer and many people find irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) a long term problem because it can never be completely cured. You can manage irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) though through careful use of diet and making some positive lifestyle changes. Being careful about how you eat and drink and how you live your life has been known to substantially improve the condition.

How your diet can affect Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Which are the typical ‘red light’ food and drink that are known to aggravate irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) sufferers?

>>

Dairy/milk products, Chocolate, Alcohol, Caffeine, Carbonated drinks, Fatty or spicy foods, Red meats, heavily processed foods of any kind, bran…but you may well have foods that trigger you personally.

Which are the typical ‘green light’ food and drink that is known to help irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) sufferers?

>> Water: Loads of it! Have you seen what happens to a plant that is starved of water – it wilts…don’t wilt yourself. Drink a full glass of pure refreshing water every 2 hours from when you wake until the early evening. It will start to thoroughly irrigate your system and will help flush your bowel. Commit to doing this for 14 days and track the difference it makes. Don’t ever wait to be thirsty before you drink.
>> Fibre: To bulk up the stools and make them soft and easier to pass – a great partner for all that water you’re drinking. Plenty of fibre in a variety of forms is what you should aim for.
>> Fruit: Like Pears, apricots, apples and peaches but nothing too acid like lemon or sticky like bananas. Keep your fruit diet varied.
>> Vegetables: Like raw carrots, raw broccoli, cabbage and peas. Kidney beans and Lima beans could also be beneficial. Keep your vegetable diet varied.
>> Cereals: Be cautious with cereals and grains and especially watch out for wheat and gluten in cereals. Check the packaging of Whole-grain bread and Whole-grain cereal. Keep your Cereal diet varied.
>> Meat and fish: White meat and fish, small quantities and vary what you eat

You can also use some of the supplements available from this website, but ask a therapist what would be right for you.

Another fantastic product for IBS is Perfect food. Your tummy might seem upset for a few days after you start taking it but will soon rebalance and the feedback we have received from customers when using Perfect Food has been really encouraging.

Use the supplements by adding them gradually to your daily diet and many IBS sufferers have found improvements in their condition followed provided they took the supplements consistently and regularly – we’ve had very positive feedback from other irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) suffers so we hope it will also help you.

Try to avoid laxatives, antispasmodics and antidepressants if you can. If you do take them try not to become dependant upon them.

Don’t forget, exercise like walking, swimming, extra housework and gardening all help improve the condition – as long as the exercise you choose is something you enjoy and would be happy to build regularly into your weekly schedule.

Balance in life is important too, so build in time for you so you can chill out and relax. Read, meditate, take a massage, enjoy the company of friends.

Don’t let this condition negatively affect you, have appositive attitude and be prepared to choose to make changes to improve the condition.
